We are delighted to open applications for a Head ECC Nurse to join our team at Swift Referrals.
 
Opened in 2019 and purpose-built to industry leading standards, Swift Referrals is a multidisciplinary referral hospital offering the very best in veterinary excellence, all under one roof. We specialise in the areas of orthopaedics, neurology, internal medicine and soft tissue surgery, housing world-class facilities on our premises from advanced imaging machines to specialist treatment and aftercare rooms. We have 1.5T Siemens MRI scanner, 128 Slice GE CT scanner, doppler ultrasound, endoscopy, arthroscopy and state-of-the-art operating theatres, and separate dog and cat wards.
 
We have a dedicated ECC and OOH centre which houses a large ICU for our critical patients, which is the hub of our Wards and OOHs teams. We see a mixture of inpatients from our referral services, as well as cases from Swift Emergencies which is our first opinion emergency service. Reporting to our Clinical Nurse Manager, you'll benefit from the support of our your fellow Lead RVNs in Medicine & Surgery, along with our Senior Wards Nurse who will assist with daily workflow and team leadership.

How You'll Make a Difference

 
As Head ECC Nurse, you will combine hands-on clinical nursing with leadership responsibility, supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care through effective team management and workflow coordination. 
 
You’ll provide day-to-day leadership for the nursing team, support performance and development conversations, and contribute to maintaining clinical standards, efficiency, and a positive team culture. You’ll work closely with senior leadership to support the smooth running of the practice. 
 
This is full-time position worked primarily across a 4 day week with a share of occasional weekends and late shifts to ensure crossover and presence with your whole team. There is also a management on-call rota approximately every 1:6 weekends, to support the team in the event of any non-clinical emergencies. 
 
Leadership responsibilities will include:
  • Lead and manage a dedicated team of RVNs & ACAs across our Wards, ICU & OOHs services 
  • Work closely with clinicians from all disciplines to deliver individualised, gold-standard care to hospitalised patients.
  • Support the development and training of your team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement, while proactively managing staffing levels to meet service demand.

    Clinical nursing duties will include:
  • Post op patient care (soft tissue and orthopaedics)
  • Complex medical cases including oncology patients
  • A varied OOH caseload
  • ECC/intensive care cases
  • Placement and/or maintenance of central catheters, PICC lines, arterial lines etc.

    You Might Be a Great Fit If...

     
    You are an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse who is ready to step into a formal leadership role. You’ll bring: 
     
  • Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS 
  • Strong clinical nursing experience with confidence supporting complex cases in ECC and/or Wards
  • Experience of leading a team and coaching and developing direct reports
  • The ability to lead by example, manage workflow, and support team performance 
  • Strong communication, organisational, and decision-making skills 
  • Further qualifications in ECC or similar would be advantageous 
  •
