We are proud to announce that our Glasgow Hospital is now inviting applications for discipline specific Emergency and Critical Care Intern.  This is a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with the ECC specialist team and expand your skills, knowledge and experience in this discipline. The aim of this role is to further abilities in ECC and will include clinical work in ICU and receiving emergency referrals, as well as having some time set-aside to undertake independent study and to work with other specialties in order to enhance ECC-appropriate skills.

In our Glasgow hospital we work as a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the best possible standard of care for our patients; the successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and liaise with other disciplines within the hospital. Within our ICU we have the ability to provide advanced mechanical ventilation, high-flow nasal oxygen therapy and perform therapeutic plasma exchange. Our veterinary team is supported by an experienced and dedicated ICU nursing team.

Position Overview:


Embracing the learning environment and being inspired by our experts requires an Intern committed to integrity and ethical standards with a strong emphasis on client and patient care. Interns must proactively engage in their own training and career advancement by attending pre-planned seminars, journal clubs and local ad-hoc teaching opportunities. They will also be responsible for working with clinical mentors to actively take part in research projects.  

Interns will work with their supervising clinician to participate effectively in all aspects of planning, diagnosis and treatment of cases. Animal welfare and the ethics of interventions must be considered by balancing practical and financial factors when determining appropriate patient care. Therefore, the ability to apply prior knowledge and experience to maintain the high clinical standards expected within our hospitals is essential. 

Interns will openly engage in case discussions with the ECC specialists, ECC residents and senior nursing team and should contribute to a positive, informative, respectful and inclusive environment for all. Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence is also a key component of this role. 

You will support the day to day running of the hospital under the direction of the ECC specialists, we require strong communication skills, compassion, reliability and professionalism coupled with the ability to priortise and remain calm during challenging circumstances.
Glasgow has a well-established residency programme, and discipline-specific interns will be also be involved in organised teaching; there is opportunity to transition from discipline-specific intern to a residency position for the appropriate candidate.

  • What we offer:


  • A twelve-month training position in Emergency and Critical Care
  • Working closely with our experienced referral clinicians to investigate and manage a wide variety of ECC cases, with some primary case responsibility
  • The chance to rotate through other hospital disciplines or arrange externships at other hospitals
  • Support from a clinical mentor in Emergency and Critical Care
  • A predominantly daytime role with minimal out-of-hours commitments
  • Dedication to your learning and professional growth – with provision of pre-planned seminars, journal clubs and ad-hoc teaching opportunities as well as paid CPD allowance/CPD time, RCVS Knowledge Library Membership and time set-aside to undertake independent study
  • The opportunity to work on clinical research projects
  • Generous renumeration package and workplace pension – salary of £35,000 per annum with RCVS and VDS registration fees covered
  • Seven weeks annual leave and your birthday off

  • What you need:


  • A strong interest in small animal Emergency and Critical Care
  • Excellent communication and English language skills (it would also be desirable that applicants provide evidence of competency in speaking English, as determined by a formal qualification in English such as IELTS or TOEFL)
  • High clinical standards and professional integrity, with a strong emphasis on patient and client care
  • Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence
  • Eligibility to work in the UK (We welcome applications from all candidates who are eligible to apply for the right to work in the UK and possess the required Visa documents)
  • Registration/eligibility for registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
  • A can-do attitude, and willingness to contribute to a positive, informative, respectful and inclusive environment for all
  • A minimum of one year experience working in small animal veterinary medicine (prior completion of a small animal rotating internship is desirable but not required)
