Mullingar Pet Hospital is seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinary Practitioner to join our friendly, established, and growing team. This is an outstanding opportunity for a confident clinician who enjoys clinical autonomy, values strong client relationships, and is looking for a role where they can genuinely make an impact.
Whether you're an experienced Veterinary Surgeon ready for your next challenge or a Lead Clinician looking for greater responsibility without sacrificing work-life balance, this role offers the chance to play a pivotal role in a busy first-opinion small animal practice while being supported by a highly collaborative veterinary network.
At Mullingar Pet Hospital, we believe experienced vets should be empowered to practise medicine their way. You'll have the freedom to manage cases from first presentation through to resolution, develop your own clinical interests, and contribute ideas that help shape the future direction of the practice.
Mullingar Pet Hospital has built a strong reputation within the local community, caring for a loyal and growing client base. Our experienced team includes a full-time Veterinary Surgeon, dedicated nursing support, and an excellent support staff team who work together to deliver exceptional standards of care.
This is a practice where teamwork genuinely matters. You'll be joining a welcoming environment that encourages collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional development, while still giving you the space to make independent clinical decisions.
The clinic is fully equipped to support a varied caseload and high-quality first-opinion medicine and surgery, allowing you to work cases up thoroughly and deliver the best possible outcomes for your patients.
One of the unique advantages of this position is the close relationship between Mullingar Pet Hospital, Auburn Veterinary Hospital, and Athlone Vets. You'll become part of a wider group of experienced veterinary professionals who are approachable, supportive, and always available for clinical discussion, advice, and collaboration.
For a veterinary surgeon seeking autonomy without professional isolation, this creates an ideal balance. You'll have the independence of a local practice while benefiting from the expertise, camaraderie, and resources of a larger veterinary community.
While your primary base will be Mullingar Pet Hospital, occasional flexibility to support the wider group may be required. This collaborative approach provides additional clinical exposure and strengthens the support available across all practices.
We recognise that every veterinary career is different. Whether your passion lies in surgery, dentistry, imaging, internal medicine, preventative healthcare, or another area of small animal practice, we are committed to helping you develop your interests.
This role is particularly suited to an experienced clinician looking to take on greater ownership and responsibility within a practice. If you've ever wanted more influence over clinical standards, service development, or the client experience without the pressures of ownership, this could be the ideal next step.
Further qualifications, certificates, and areas of special interest are actively encouraged and fully supported.
Work-life balance is important to us. We are open to full-time, part-time, and flexible working arrangements and are keen to build a schedule that works for both the successful candidate and the practice.
Participation in a Saturday rota is required, however we are happy to explore flexibility across the remainder of the working week. There are no out-of-hours commitments, Sundays, or bank holiday shifts, allowing you to enjoy your time outside of work while maintaining a rewarding and engaging clinical role.
Located in the heart of Ireland, Mullingar offers an exceptional quality of life. Combining the convenience of a thriving town with the beauty of the surrounding countryside, it provides something for everyone.
From beautiful lakes and walking trails to cafés, restaurants, golf courses, water sports, and excellent transport links, Mullingar is an increasingly popular destination for professionals seeking a better balance between career and lifestyle. Dublin is easily accessible, while the Midlands offer a welcoming community atmosphere and a lower cost of living than many larger cities.
We're looking for a VCI-registered Veterinary Surgeon with proven experience in a first-opinion small animal practice. You'll be confident managing a varied caseload, comfortable working both sole charge and as part of a wider team, and competent in routine surgery and medical case management.
You'll combine strong clinical skills with excellent communication, building trusted relationships with clients and delivering outstanding patient care. Most importantly, you'll be a collaborative, proactive clinician who enjoys taking ownership of cases, contributing to practice growth, and supporting a positive team culture.
Whether you're an experienced Veterinary Surgeon seeking greater autonomy or a Lead Clinician looking for your next challenge, this role offers the opportunity to make a real impact while continuing to develop your clinical interests and career.
In addition to a salary of up to €60,000 depending on experience, you'll benefit from a generous package designed to support your wellbeing, career progression, and long-term success.
Benefits include:
22 days annual leave plus birthday leave
No out-of-hours or Sunday work
Paid maternity, paternity, and adoptive leave packages
Cycle to Work scheme

Dedicated CARE fund – €1,100 annual contribution per vet to use on a case of your choice

This is much more than a traditional first-opinion role. It's an opportunity to join a supportive and ambitious team, build on your clinical strengths, develop your professional interests, and enjoy the autonomy that comes with being a trusted and valued member of the practice.
If you're looking for a role where your experience is recognised, your ideas are welcomed, and your career development is genuinely supported, we would love to hear from you.
