Wheelhouse Vets has been proudly serving our local area for over 60 years and is a true go-to practice for the community. We’re looking for a dedicated Veterinary Surgeon to join our friendly and welcoming team working across the Wheelhouse group. With four branches across Chesham, Amersham, Chalfont St Giles, and Beaconsfield while based at Chesham. You’ll have the opportunity to work across a variety of sites, giving you the chance to expand your clinical experience and learn from a wide range of cases.
We’re accredited to GP standard with the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme and hold Silver ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic accreditation, reflecting our high standards of care and patient welfare.
A Well-Equipped Practice Designed for You
Our Chesham branch, the original Wheelhouse practice, is one of our main hubs and provides a welcoming environment for both clients and team members. It includes a cosy reception area with separate cat and dog waiting areas, three consultation rooms (including a dedicated nurse consult room), prep and dental area, X-ray room, separate cat and dog wards, theatre, lab, dispensary, isolation area, and three office spaces for quiet admin time.
Our staff facilities are just as thoughtful with a comfortable staff room stocked with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, fruit, snacks, and a full biscuit tin to keep you fueled throughout the day.
We’re proud to have a wide range of equipment including dental X-ray, ultrasound, ECG, laser, tonometers, and a variety of scopes, ensuring you have everything you need to work cases up thoroughly and provide the best care possible.
A Varied and Rewarding Caseload
No two days are the same at Wheelhouse. You’ll enjoy a balanced mix of consulting and surgery, treating everything from cats, dogs, rabbits, and small furries to the occasional chicken. Our surgical work includes routine castrates, lap spays, lump removals, TTAs, orthopaedics, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, otoscopy, and dentals, giving you the opportunity to broaden your skills and pursue areas of interest.
We take a thoughtful approach to antibiotic use, maintaining a low prescription rate across species to help reduce resistance and encourage proper case investigation. With most procedures handled in-house, we also have the flexibility to refer internally or externally when needed.
A Supportive, Skilled, and Collaborative Team
Our team is one of our greatest strengths. We have 12 vets, 1 practice manager, 16 RVNs (including a Head Nurse), 4 SVNs, 12 client care representatives, and 4 additional support staff. We’re also proud of our dedicated Rehab Team, made up of a veterinary physiotherapist and two specialist RVNs.
You’ll be joining a practice rich in knowledge and experience with certificate holders in ECC, Cardiology, AVP in Dermatology, Feline Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Internal Medicine, ensuring support and guidance are always available. Our nursing team is highly skilled and deeply involved in patient care, running their own nurse clinics, assisting in theatre, and sharing their expertise.
If you’re looking to develop your skills further, we actively encourage and support ongoing education, certificates, and career progression including helping you transfer or complete any part-finished qualifications.
A Culture That Cares
At Wheelhouse, we know that happy, supported teams provide the best care. That’s why we’ve developed a number of initiatives to prioritise wellbeing, including our in-branch wellness team who help make sure everyone feels comfortable, supported, and valued. We also love spending time together outside of work typically hosting five social events each year to relax, have fun, and strengthen our team bonds.
Giving Back to Our Community
We’re passionate about our community and love getting involved in local events and charity work. Throughout the year, we host fundraising events such as Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day and Macmillan Coffee Mornings. We also work closely with Cats Protection, Hearing Dogs, and Marjorie Nash Cat Rescue, supporting their vital work wherever we can.
Our community spirit shines at local fairs and shows, where we run stalls, tombolas, and “pup cake” stands, we raised over £1,000 for Marjorie Nash and Hearing Dogs at our summer fayre. We’re proud of the strong relationships we’ve built with local pet owners and charities, and we love being an active part of the community we serve.
A Work-Life Balance That Works for You
Our full-time vets work 40 hours across four days per week, Monday to Friday, including 1 in 4 Saturdays (9am–4pm). There are no out-of-hours commitments, giving you time to unwind and enjoy life outside of work.
