Can you tell us about yourself and how you came to work at The Vet Centre?

I trained in the mid-'90s at The Croft in Brackley, and I qualified in 1996. After a career break to raise my three children, I became a claims assessor for the Kennel Club and later Agria. Unfortunately, a family tragedy led me to seek work closer to home, and a working environment where I could have flexibility, and that's when I joined The Vet Centre thirteen years ago.

Being part of the team here, I've been encouraged to pursue further education. I’m a clinical canine massage practitioner; I have a BSAVA Vet Nurse Merit Award in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, and I achieved the Blue Paw award for arthritis with the VOA (Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance). I’m looking forward to attending their congress this year!

I’m particularly interested in working in arthritis care, including post-op care for orthopaedic surgeries, and I recently began a dermatology course too which I’m excited about.

What motivates you to continue developing your knowledge, and how are you supported at the practice?

The support here is fantastic. I'm encouraged to expand my skills and knowledge. I want to contribute to areas where benefit from extra knowledge in the nursing team, especially in arthritis care. I can have longer appointments which helps when explaining issues to pet owners, and it gives the vets more time to focus on their work if I can support with this kind of thing. I also really enjoy being hands-on, learning every day, and being actively involved in helping our patients.

Can you tell me about the cases you handle and your daily routine?

Working four days a week, I handle various cases from vaccinations to appointments with our regulars for weight clinics. As a practice, we’ll regularly do heart scans, dentals, and orthopaedic surgeries.

Our team works closely, collaborating seamlessly during emergencies. We've developed a positive atmosphere and spend time together outside of work. We even went tank driving on a work social once a few years ago!

What's your favourite aspect of working at The Vet Centre?

It feels like a second home. I feel valued and listened to, and I’ve had the chance to develop my skills and knowledge to help give the very best care to our patients.

If someone is considering joining the team, what would you tell them?

They'll receive a friendly welcome, be valued, and have opportunities for growth and support in areas they want to explore. It's a place where encouragement and support are always present.

We have a mix of experienced and newer vets, providing a valuable blend of perspectives and wisdom, as well as plenty of knowledge sharing and discussion.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

I would say of building relationships with clients. I initially worried about returning after an eight-year break, but the encouragement and support allowed me to feel confident. I'm proud of being able to introduce new ideas, like arthritis clinics, and feeling the backing of my team.

What do you do outside of work?

I horse ride, walk my dogs, enjoy aromatherapy, and spend time with my three children. I'm also a caregiver for my mom, who has dementia. I love going to concerts too.

We are also very lucky that we can bring our animals to work, when you've had a particularly difficult case, it's so lovely to go to the back office and give your dog a hug.
