I’m a devoted mother of two children, alongside caring for a tortoise, a working cocker spaniel, and a small brood of chickens. Following my secondary education, I pursued further studies in animal care at college, dedicating one day per week to practical experience within a veterinary practice while also volunteering every Saturday.

Although the initial practice where I pursued my studies was unable to offer a placement for veterinary nursing, I kept looking until I successfully gained a position at Carmel Vets, where I’ve now been since I was 17! I was supported by the practice to become a registered veterinary nurse at the age of 20. Now, I’m the nurse manager, overseeing a dynamic team while also managing diverse responsibilities across our multiple sites.

What motivates you to work in the veterinary industry?

My passion for animals has been the driving force behind my career in the veterinary industry. From a young age, I recognised nursing as my true calling, with a commitment to ensuring the very best patient care. I enjoy the multifaceted nature of my role, which allows me to blend hands-on nursing duties with my other responsibilities.

Can you tell us more about the practice and the team, and what it’s like to work there?

Carmel Vets has a great work environment, characterised by positivity and professionalism. Our team operates cohesively, and there’s a sense of mutual respect and collaboration. At the heart, is our commitment to respecting each other.

What kinds of cases do you see at the practice?

As a small animal first opinion practice we see a range of surgical and medical cases. Our veterinary surgeons have fabulous clinical knowledge and surgical skills while referring the more complex or unusual cases as appropriate.

What are your favourite things about working at the practice?

The camaraderie among our team and our dedication to patient welfare, as well as our pursuit of excellence in veterinary care. We’re always striving for the gold standard and being proud of what we do.

What do you feel the practice has to offer that someone thinking of joining might not know about?

In addition to our robust clinical facilities, which include ultrasound, digital x-ray, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, and in-house laboratory capabilities, our practice prides itself on cultivating a supportive and inclusive workplace culture. We prioritise the well-being of our team members, patients, and clients, fostering an environment where growth and collaboration can flourish.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy spending time outdoors going for walks with my dog Logan, going jogging, and spending time with my husband and children. I enjoy renovating our family home as well.

What are you proudest of in your veterinary career so far?

I’m really proud of qualifying as a vet nurse, and then going on to become nurse manager here. It’s been a really rewarding journey.

Tell us about your pets

We have quite a few! There’s Logan, a spirited three-year-old working cocker spaniel who brings boundless joy and energy to our lives. We’ve also got Timmy, a four-year-old Mediterranean Tortoise, and a delightful duo of 13-week-old chickens named Ralph and Rosie. With the arrival of spring we should be getting some more chicks too.
