What inspired you to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?

From an early age, I loved reading the James Herriot books. That combination of animals, medicine, and the human connection really resonated with me, and it planted the seed for becoming a vet. I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving, working with my hands, and helping others — so veterinary felt like the perfect fit.

Why did you choose the IVC Evidensia Graduate Academy programme?

I chose the Graduate Academy because it offered the most structured and supportive start to my career. The balance of clinical development, CPD, mentorship, and wellbeing support really appealed to me.

What impressed me most was how comprehensive the programme is — it’s not just clinical skills but everything about becoming a well-rounded, confident practitioner.

How has your experience compared to your expectations?

The programme has genuinely exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be supportive, but I didn’t realise just how invested the team would be in my progress.

The skills sessions, the social side of meeting other grads, and the constant reassurance that it’s okay to ask for help have all made a huge difference. I feel far more confident in practice than I imagined I would at this stage.

Can you share a memorable moment from your veterinary career so far?

I’ll never forget pulling my first sock out of a dog! Moments like that stay with you — it was both stressful and strangely satisfying. It’s those real-life firsts that make early career practice so exciting.

What aspects of the Graduate Academy have been the most valuable?

The structure. Having a clear pathway, regular CPD, and opportunities to learn alongside other graduates has been invaluable.

I also really value the reassurance that the Academy provides — knowing you’re not expected to know everything right away and having dedicated spaces to learn and grow without pressure.

How has having a mentor supported your development?

My mentors at both the practice and regional levels have been fantastic. They’ve offered guidance, helped me reflect on cases, and built my confidence in decision-making.

Having someone to check in with regularly — someone who genuinely wants to help you succeed — has made my transition from university to practice much smoother.

What do you enjoy most about your job so far?

I enjoy the variety of the role and the chance to work through a wide range of cases. No two days are the same, and I love developing my skills while still having the support of my team and the Graduate Academy behind me.

What goals do you have for the future?

Right now, I want to continue developing in general practice and see where that takes me. I’m keen to build on my clinical skills, explore new areas of interest, and keep growing as a veterinary professional.

What is one thing you wish more people understood about the veterinary profession?

I’d love people to know just how passionate the profession is about animal care. Behind every case is a team who genuinely wants to do the best for their patients, and it’s that dedication and teamwork that makes the job so rewarding.
