What inspired you to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?

I grew up around animals on a farm, and all my pets were registered with Vale Vets. I’ve always been passionate about animals—both pets and livestock—and I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving and working with people. Those qualities made becoming a vet feel like a natural fit.

Why did you choose the IVC Evidensia Graduate Academy programme?

I had friends in older years who really enjoyed the programme. The CPD schedule looked fantastic and very tailored to the areas where I wanted more training. It felt like the right place to start my career with structure, support, and plenty of opportunities to learn.

How has your experience been different from your expectations?

My experience has exceeded my expectations. I settled in much more quickly than I anticipated, especially with procedures I hadn’t performed independently before. The support from my practice has been incredible, and within just a few weeks I felt confident handling a wide range of cases. I genuinely look forward to coming to work every day, and that’s largely thanks to the fantastic team around me.

Can you share a memorable moment from your veterinary career so far?

A memorable moment for me was helping a young dog with severe dental issues. After arranging a referral to a veterinary dental resident, he underwent a major dental procedure and made an amazing recovery. At his post-op check, he was a completely different dog—brighter, happier, and far more comfortable. Seeing that transformation was incredibly rewarding.

What parts of your experience with the Graduate Academy have been the most valuable?

I really enjoyed the surgery course at Blaise Referral Hospital. It was incredibly helpful receiving practical teaching from someone with a surgical certificate. That hands-on experience made a big difference to my confidence.

How has having a mentor impacted your confidence and growth?

My mentor has been an incredible source of support. Having someone to talk through cases with, reflect on decisions, and guide my development has helped me grow in confidence much faster than I expected. It’s reassuring to have someone invested in helping you succeed.

What goals do you have for the future?

In the future, I’d love to pursue further training in a clinical discipline. I’ve always been interested in medicine, but I’m really enjoying surgery too. For now, I’m embracing the variety of first-opinion practice and building a strong foundation so I can specialise when the time feels right.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy my surgery days and my out-of-hours shifts. I love working up a case from start to finish and seeing those happy endings—it’s incredibly satisfying.

What is one thing you wish more people would understand about the veterinary profession?

I’d love people to know just how rewarding veterinary work can be. It’s a profession full of problem-solving, teamwork, and moments that make you smile. Every day brings a chance to help an animal feel better, and that’s something really special.
