I started working in an IVC Evidensia mixed-practice vets in Northern Ireland during my second year of training for my diploma in Veterinary Nursing. I stayed at this practice and continued my career as an RVN for a couple of years. I particularly enjoyed monitoring operations, nurse consultations, and wound management. Knowing I was helping sick animals was very fulfilling.
In 2024, I got married and moved to Scotland, where I transferred to a local veterinary practice as a receptionist. This role was ideal at the time due to the stress of wedding planning and moving. I am enjoying my time as a receptionist and growing in knowledge within this side of the veterinary sector. I’m also expecting my first child this July, so the receptionist job is a better fit for me at the moment. However, I would like to return to Veterinary Nursing at a later date.
What inspired you to work in the veterinary sector?
I have always had an interest in veterinary nursing and love working with animals. Growing up on a farm and running my own horse livery/sales business before undertaking my diploma helped me mature and gain experience.
As a receptionist, I enjoy working in the vet practice environment, helping clients navigate their concerns and questions. My time as a receptionist has given me a better understanding of the importance of this role in keeping the day running smoothly. The front desk is truly the heart of the practice, coordinating between clients, patients, and the clinical team.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day is a mix of customer service and administrative work. I handle phone inquiries, schedule appointments, and coordinate medication orders for both farm and small animals. I also manage large animal farm visits, process payments, and ensure lab reports are handled efficiently. Every day brings new challenges, from organising dairy farm calls to making sure pets and livestock get the care they need.
What are your favourite things about your job?
I enjoy working as part of a team where every person plays a vital role in delivering quality care. The collaborative nature of veterinary medicine means we're constantly learning from each other and supporting one another through challenging cases.
Helping clients with their enquiries and bookings gives me satisfaction, especially when I can alleviate their concerns or find a solution to a difficult scheduling problem.
I understand it can be an incredibly stressful time for clients when their pets become unwell, and being able to support and connect with them is important. There's something deeply rewarding about being the reassuring voice on the phone or the friendly face at reception who helps guide them through a difficult situation. I particularly enjoy the moments when clients bring in their recovered pets for check- ups, and we can celebrate their return to health together.
The variety each day brings keeps the role interesting - from the farmer who needs urgent advice about a calving to the anxious new puppy owner attending their first vaccination appointment, each interaction requires different skills and approaches. I also appreciate how my veterinary nursing background allows me to better understand the clinical side, helping me communicate more effectively between the clients and the veterinary team.

It’s rewarding to be part of such a dedicated group, knowing that our combined efforts make a real difference for our clients and their animals.
