"Being an imaging nurse...it's the best of both worlds - the camaraderie of a close-knit team within the support of a larger team"

Can you tell us about your journey to become a part of the diagnostic imaging team?

It all began in the early 2000s after I completed my Zoology honours degree. I started as a receptionist/ACA in a small one-vet practice on the south side of Glasgow. That's where I discovered my passion for veterinary work.
I really enjoyed the nursing side of the role. I started my training to become a qualified RVN in 2017 when I was sponsored to do a veterinary nursing diploma course.

Could you tell us about your current role as an imaging nurse and what it entails?

As an imaging nurse, my primary responsibility is to support the diagnostic imagers during ultrasonography. This includes restraining and monitoring patients requiring ultrasonography, setting up equipment, and ensuring the imagers have all the necessary patient information.
I ensure the efficient operation of the caseload plus equipment configuration and maintenance plus setting up for sampling (FNA, cystocentesis, cholecystocentesis, prostatic wash, SUBS flush etc). I perform routine audits to ensure the CT, x-ray and ultrasound equipment is functioning and uploading properly. I am responsible for the hospital staff's x-ray dosimeter badges. I also organise the calendar for visiting interns. Extra things like general housekeeping, cleaning, stock control etc.
I am looking forward to receiving training on the operation of the CT equipment and hopefully RPS training in the near future.

What motivated you to pursue a career in diagnostic imaging specifically?

I've always had a fascination with diagnostic imaging in my previous roles. When the opportunity arose, it felt like a natural next step for me. Being an imaging nurse allows me to work closely with a small team within the larger community of the hospital. It's the best of both worlds - the camaraderie of a close-knit team within the support of a larger team.

Tell us more about what it’s like working with the team

I have a fantastic relationship with the imaging team, which includes myself and the diagnostic imagers. We've formed a close bond, and they're all excellent to work with. We strike a balance between fun and serious discussions about cases. I appreciate the respect they've shown me and the inclusion in major decisions. We work closely with internal medicine and oncology, and everyone has been welcoming and friendly since I joined in May 2022. We even spend time together outside of work!

What do you enjoy most about your role as an imaging nurse?

One of the things I love about being the only imaging nurse is that it allows me to set my own pace and, with input from the imagers, run the service efficiently. I've come to know the imagers' individual preferences and needs, which ensures a smooth and effective service for our patients and clients. It's incredibly rewarding to contribute to their well-being.
I do miss interacting with clients, but I'm excited about the development of the upcoming outpatient ultrasound service, which will allow me to engage with owners once again.
