I've been qualified as a registered vet nurse for just over three years now. Previously, I worked with a different IVC Evidensia practice, but decided I wanted to relocate to somewhere a bit closer to home, and that's when I joined The Vet Clinic. Since then, I've become the branch lead and have a student vet nurse and a student veterinary care assistant who I’m the clinical coach for. I joined the IVC Evidensia Nurse Academy when I first came which was a great supportive start.

I've always had a passion for animals. When I first considered my career options, I initially wanted to be a vet, but I found during work experience I preferred the nursing side of things. Once I’d made that decision, I knew I wanted to be a clinical coach, so when the opportunity arose here, I gladly accepted. It's really fulfilling getting to share your knowledge and skills.

It sounds like you’ve had a really rewarding experience. Could you tell us more about The Vet Clinic and what it's like working there?

We're a relatively small practice, we have two consult rooms and operate every day except Wednesdays. We see a variety of cases from across the local community, and we also handle emergencies. It's a great, collaborative environment. Everyone understands their role and how they can contribute to the goals of the team. We work well together. We’ve also got the benefit of being part of the IVC Evidensia network which means local branches within our network can provide support and vice versa.

We have a nice ultrasound machine, which is great and have recently upgraded several pieces of equipment, including our drip pumps etc. It's a lovely practice. We even have a separate staff room upstairs which provides a nice separation from work when you’re having a break.

Working at The Vet Clinic is incredibly rewarding because of our fantastic team atmosphere. Whether it's assisting in surgeries, handling consultations, or responding to emergencies, everyone pulls together to provide the best possible care for our patients. We’re all committed towards the common goal of ensuring the health and well-being of the animals under our care.

What would you say you're most proud of in your career so far?

I would say I'm most proud of two things: firstly, becoming a clinical coach, and secondly, my commitment to ongoing learning and professional development. Becoming a clinical coach has been incredibly fulfilling as it allows me to pass on my knowledge and experience to the next generation of veterinary nurses. It's great to see them grow and thrive under my guidance!

I’ve just begun an emergency and critical care certificate which will equip me with more advanced skills and knowledge to handle critical situations more effectively, which I know will enhance the level of care I can provide to our patients at The Vet Clinic.
 
I’m grateful for the support IVC Evidensia provides for my professional growth. They have provided the resources, training opportunities, and encouragement every step of the way. There’s a real commitment to fostering the development of the team. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead as I continue to expand my skills and knowledge.

Tell us more about the ECC certificate, that sounds really exciting.

It’s something I've always wanted to do. I have other nurse friends from uni who have completed, and they spoke highly of the experience. It's a comprehensive course and I’m looking forward to it and being able to apply my skills within the practice. Because the cost has been covered as part of my CPD allowance, it's made it much more accessible for me.

Tell us about your pets!

Yes, I have five dogs and a horse. I have a Springer Cross Labrador called Pickle, and then family dogs include a Springer Spaniel, a Cocker Spaniel, a German Short-Haired Pointer, and a Border Terrier. Unfortunately, I lost one of my horses recently, so have only one just now and he's been with me for about 13 years.

What do you like to do to unwind?

I'm quite outdoorsy, so I enjoy activities like clay pigeon shooting. My dogs used to be working dogs, so I spend a lot of time outdoors with them as well. I’m involved with the local young farmers as well, which is great.
